That's a lot of movies to announce in the upcoming years. A lot of characters that people have been asking for to see for years now are finally getting a movie. We're getting a stand-alone black super hero movie since the "Blade" movies and Will Smith's "Hancock" with Black Panther. We're getting a stand alone superheroine movie with Captain Marvel (I know Wonder Woman is getting her own movie as well, and that's a good thing it's been too long).
Now here's the interesting part, at this event that Marvel had the other day they announced that Black Panther had already been casted, Chadwick Boseman will take up the role of the Wakanda Prince, and will have his debut during the "Captain America 3: Civil War" movie. Wait, what? Black Panther is going to be in Civil War, and he could fill the role of Spider-Man in the Civil War.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Marvel's "Civil War" it is an all out hero-vs-hero brawl over the idea of super heroes registering with the government. A small town of Stamford, Connecticut is caught in the crossfire of a super hero-super villain showdown that leads to the explosion next to an elementary school. Thousands of people die and the government pushes through a Super-human Registration Act, there are two options: register your identity and continue to fight crime, or refuse to register and fight crime illegally and become a criminal yourself.
On one side of the issue is Tony Stark, Ironman, who is for registration. Tony believes that the registration of superheroes is a natural process of the superhero world, to hold heroes accountable for the damage they cause cities *cough* New York *cough*. Tony's right hand man during this time of the comics is Peter Parker, Spider-Man, who Tony knows is Spider-Man. Peter works for Tony and follows him around for Stark Industries functions.
The other side of the fence during this issue is Steve Rodgers, Captain America, who is strongly against registration. Cap's feelings against registration stem from his experience in World War II where Jews were first registered by the Nazi government and then rounded up and exterminated. Steve sees this registration act as the first step in a slippery slope that could lead to the end of superheroes and the good they do. Cap resists Ironman and the government and sets up an underground resistance that splits the Marvel Universe, friends against friends and family member against family member.
So where does Spider-Man fit in on this issue? Spider-Man is the biggest name hero in the Marvel Universe that keeps his identity a secret (except when he's dating someone...) and is the hero that everyone looks to, to see how he handles the registration act. Parker working for Stark reveals his identity to the public via news conference and receives mixed reactions from everyone. Some people applaud him for revealing his identity, while others try to sue him, harm him or his family now knowing his real name and where he lives. Peter has a true crisis and truly converts sides following his visit to the Negative Zone (don't ask) and the prison that Tony and Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) have created to house supers. It all leads to a big battle between those in favor of registration and the resisters. I won't reveal who wins, no spoilers here, but it sets up the next phase in the comics universe of heroes after this event.
So now we discussed Spider-Man, where does Black Panther fit into this in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Black Panther, T'Challa, is a royal member of the fictional advanced African tribe in Wakanda that is hidden from the outside world. The Black Panther title is one that is hereditary, but must be earned by some feat. Since Black Panther is in a hidden society it can be quite safe to say that the only people who know the true identity of the Black Panther are those within the community in the know. T'Challa for the movie of "Captain America: Civil War" is going to be his debut, most likely as an unknown character for the most part, a hero wearing a mask who people wonder who he is.
T'Challa could then be sought after by Tony and asked to reveal his identity to help his registration act among the MCU. This role of being the "Spider-Man" role in the "Civil War" story arc could be filled by this new character, and I think that means the end of the talks for Sony's "Amazing Spider-Man" showing up in the Avengers or other MCU titles. T'Challa is a masked hero with a relatively secret identity and could be asked to reveal it to drive the plot of "Civil War" and Marvel now doesn't need Spider-Man. And that could be bad for Sony and their Spider-Man plans.
There have been countless rumors going around the internet about the idea of Spider-Man being allowed to show up in Marvel movies because of the lackluster performance of "The Amazing Spider-Man" franchise. Marvel wants Spider-Man's rights back, and it seems pretty clear that they know what they are able to do with characters in a bigger universe setting. Sony needs this deal more than Marvel needs it though, Sony knows that the reboot for this franchise has underperformed and has even dropped some of their projects related to it because of the woes.
Marvel can wait for Sony's control of the rights to run up and let Spider-Man die in Sony's hands. Marvel just announced movies that are five years in the future and are looking to expand on those when they are complete and huge successes, making them more money.
In conclusion, the new Marvel movies coming up look like they are going to take the superhero movies into a new territory, and it's awesome. Minority characters are getting a representation in the movies now and that's a good thing to expand to a new audience, and to be honest it's about time we have these heroes on screen. Black Panther could be the end of a Marvel-Sony team up to bring Spider-Man into the MCU, and that is probably what Marvel wants to get Spidey back in their hands.
Let me know what you guys think, could this be the end of a possible Spidey-Avengers team up in the upcoming future? Or will the deal work out?
Excelsior!!
